Song of the week #3 - Now or Never by Fatal Intentions

Fatal Intention, a 4 piece hardcore band from Perth, have just released their debut EP.

‘Now or Never’, the 4th track of their EP, is a great example of Fatal Intentions style that draws from artists such as Stick To Your Guns and Black Flag. ‘Now or Never’ starts with a quick intro that flows into a simpler “air-y” verse, then brings us back up for the chorus. An awesome use of dynamics in the verse, chorus and bridge and great instrumentation was my focus. Although I don’t listen to very much hardcore I did find myself enjoying this song. The only real negative aspect I found when listening to the track was the quality of the record particularly the vocals, but this was only a minor problem.

Great musicians, and great song writers. I think we will be definitely being seeing more from Fatal Intentions

Song of The Week #2 - Babydoll by The Corner

In the spotlight are ‘The Corner’, a three piece rock/punk/pop band (in that order). With 2 EP’s, inclusion into 5 international compilation albums, 3 music videos with thousands of hits and with one of their songs having reached 5th on the triple J charts they have certainly caused a stir.

‘Babydoll’, the second song off their EP ‘Aches and Alcohol’, is a great example of their rock/punk/pop genre. It features catchy riffs, awesome dynamics and a rocking climax. ‘Babydoll’ starts off with a bass riff that is followed by the addition of drums and a catchy guitar riff that acts as the chorus. ‘Babydoll’ contains interesting structure beginning with 2 verses, which are separated by a small instrumental chorus, then into the chorus that builds to the solo that flows into the final chorus only to come to a dramatic ending.

This was the first time I had listened to ‘The Corner’ but I can safely say I loved it. I was greatly impressed with the quality of the song coming from a 3 piece band, it lacks nothing.
I hope to see much more from this awesome Perth Punk band and I look forward to sharing the stage with ‘The Corner’ on the 16th of December at the Swan Basement.

Check it out. :D

Song of The Week #1 - Smoke by Seer Cya

Smoke by Seer Cya

Seer Cya, a 4 piece “balls out rock” band, have just released their debut album ‘Prohibition’. I was put to the task of reviewing track number 6, ‘Smoke’.

‘Smoke’ begins simply in a manner that outlines the chorus riff of the song that flows seamlessly into the verse, which comparatively is less instrumentally complex. Within the first 30 seconds a good use of dynamics and instrumentation is already seen. The verse and the chorus can be easily recognised due to the catchy riff in the chorus and the guitar fills. The bridge opens the way for a perfect transition to double time which makes the song for me. An outstanding finish to a song that just gets you fired up.

Overall, ‘Smoke’ is an awesome song and my words don’t do it justice, “Balls out rock” is pretty much the best way to describe it. Catchy hooks, rhythm that seduces headbanging, and in general great instrumentation. I’m impressed that only after a mere 18 months has Seer Cya released an album, but a great album.

‘Prohibition’ launches on the 7th of January at the Rosemount Hotel, go check it out.
