Song of the week #3 - Now or Never by Fatal Intentions

Fatal Intention, a 4 piece hardcore band from Perth, have just released their debut EP.

‘Now or Never’, the 4th track of their EP, is a great example of Fatal Intentions style that draws from artists such as Stick To Your Guns and Black Flag. ‘Now or Never’ starts with a quick intro that flows into a simpler “air-y” verse, then brings us back up for the chorus. An awesome use of dynamics in the verse, chorus and bridge and great instrumentation was my focus. Although I don’t listen to very much hardcore I did find myself enjoying this song. The only real negative aspect I found when listening to the track was the quality of the record particularly the vocals, but this was only a minor problem.

Great musicians, and great song writers. I think we will be definitely being seeing more from Fatal Intentions

Song of The Week #2 - Babydoll by The Corner

In the spotlight are ‘The Corner’, a three piece rock/punk/pop band (in that order). With 2 EP’s, inclusion into 5 international compilation albums, 3 music videos with thousands of hits and with one of their songs having reached 5th on the triple J charts they have certainly caused a stir.

‘Babydoll’, the second song off their EP ‘Aches and Alcohol’, is a great example of their rock/punk/pop genre. It features catchy riffs, awesome dynamics and a rocking climax. ‘Babydoll’ starts off with a bass riff that is followed by the addition of drums and a catchy guitar riff that acts as the chorus. ‘Babydoll’ contains interesting structure beginning with 2 verses, which are separated by a small instrumental chorus, then into the chorus that builds to the solo that flows into the final chorus only to come to a dramatic ending.

This was the first time I had listened to ‘The Corner’ but I can safely say I loved it. I was greatly impressed with the quality of the song coming from a 3 piece band, it lacks nothing.
I hope to see much more from this awesome Perth Punk band and I look forward to sharing the stage with ‘The Corner’ on the 16th of December at the Swan Basement.

Check it out. :D

Song of The Week #1 - Smoke by Seer Cya

Smoke by Seer Cya

Seer Cya, a 4 piece “balls out rock” band, have just released their debut album ‘Prohibition’. I was put to the task of reviewing track number 6, ‘Smoke’.

‘Smoke’ begins simply in a manner that outlines the chorus riff of the song that flows seamlessly into the verse, which comparatively is less instrumentally complex. Within the first 30 seconds a good use of dynamics and instrumentation is already seen. The verse and the chorus can be easily recognised due to the catchy riff in the chorus and the guitar fills. The bridge opens the way for a perfect transition to double time which makes the song for me. An outstanding finish to a song that just gets you fired up.

Overall, ‘Smoke’ is an awesome song and my words don’t do it justice, “Balls out rock” is pretty much the best way to describe it. Catchy hooks, rhythm that seduces headbanging, and in general great instrumentation. I’m impressed that only after a mere 18 months has Seer Cya released an album, but a great album.

‘Prohibition’ launches on the 7th of January at the Rosemount Hotel, go check it out.

Sound Of The Guns- Diamond Eye

Diamond Eye - Sound Of The Guns by Perth Sound & Found
Reviewed By DJ Dave (Komodo Music) for Perth Sound and Found

I almost spilled my drink with excitement when I started this track. The electric guitar riff was magnificent and brought me back to the glory days of Rock when the likes of “Guns N Roses” and “KISS” ruled the airways with an iron fist.

The message in the lyrics was also very reminiscent of back in the 80’s when changing the world through music was a new but powerful force to be reckoned with. But what is amazing that the message about war, its effect and the unity of man still holds true with their music as it did for all the great rockers.

At 3:10 it kicks up a notch and you get this awesome guitar and drum combo which any air guitarist would drool over. The whole song comes in at 5:04 and usually this is too long for a modern track, but just like ‘Sweet Child Of Mine’ or ‘Stairway to Heaven’, the length is just perfect for what it delivers and I can see this making its way to the 'Hall of Fame'…Yes! It IS that good.

Amazing instrumental work, fantastic vocals, solid message, and perfect time = must have album! Be sure to check them out live here in Perth before they take off and I have to pay $110 a ticket!

Black Birds - Who's Worrying About You by Perth Sound & Found
Reviewed by DJ Dave (Komodo Music) for Perth Sound and Found

I’m not sure if “Pop Punk Rock” is actually a genre but it somehow seems to fit nicely with this band. The combinations of instruments and pace of the song initially seemed grunge but upon closer inspection, the lyrics and vocals seem more mainstream radio ‘Pop’ with a beat that was very ‘Soft Rock’.

It reminds me of those artists like “These Kings Wear Crowns” and “Hot Chelle Rae” where they seem to be a watered down Punk band for today’s mainstream listeners. This is not a bad thing and I actually like the song, but I find it difficult to find a place to play them. From a DJs point of view they are too fast for background music and too slow for dancing. This seems to be a song where ‘Live’ they are amazing but captured on CD doesn’t do it justice.

Overall I liked the song. It was well put together, the vocals were smooth and the instruments were well rehearsed and flowed nicely. I would most likely check them out at their next gig and ‘Rock Out’ on the dance floor (Yes DJs can dance, it’s just that we shouldn’t).

Katie Campbell feat. Beat Culture - Let You Be

Let You Be feat. Beat Culture by Katie Campbell

Listening to this song the first time round I am happy to admit I didn’t get it…so I did what any good reviewer does, took some acid and listened to it again…and you know what, it made more sense this time round.

Ok that was a little harsh, but if you were expecting some lyrical masterpiece I suggest you check out the next review as this song isn’t it. What it IS though is a cool electronic blend with a catchy beat and a nice voice (even if it just keeps saying the same thing over and over)

This “Ministry” sounding song would make a lovely addition to those who like their café del mar or their chill out soundtracks. I personally would use this at the beginning of an event as it gives of that “cool” vibe and is exceptionally easy to mix into.

I like the song for what it is, and although I can’t see this getting a crowd dancing, it is a perfect background track for any bar or club....or for those "special" trips ;-)

Nevsky Prospekt - Top Marks For Treachery

Nevsky Prospekt - Top Marks For Treachery by Perth Sound & Found
Reviewed by DJ Dave (Komodo Music) for Perth Sound and Found

It was almost 11pm on a Friday night, and after a hard day of work I was tired and ready for bed; but being the good reviewer I am I thought I’d listen to this song in preparation for tomorrow…well it definitely woke me up!

The beat was catchy as hell and had that old school rocky feel to it and I found myself nodding along for almost the entirety of the song

Ok, the lyrics are a bit dark but compared to a lot of songs out there it is nice to see something with heart (granted it is bloody and still beating) but at least it’s got something behind it as opposed to a lot of the “Pop Sh*t” currently being pumped through our radio speakers. I found it stopped short of the “Dark Rock” which is too heavy for me to enjoy but went beyond the “Soft Rock” which can be a little ‘naff’ for my taste. It found that happy medium which allowed me to enjoy it.

The down side for this track seems to be the downside for a lot of records I listen to; they just don’t know when to end it! The song comes in at 4:19 but it really finished at 3:32; the extra 51 seconds actually spoilt the track for me as the tempo and mood changed to dramatically and quickly. Whereas during most of the song it pumped me up and made me want to say “F**K Yeah!!” and rock out, the last 51 secs made me depressed and brought me down to way too fast for me to enjoy it.

Overall I feel this is track for those who like their rock and are looking for something more but aren’t quite ready to listen to “Alice in Chains” or “Marylyn Manson”. It will get you pumped but too much exposure may leave you bitter at the world. Love it or hate it, be sure to give it a go.

The Irrationals - Caffeine

The Irrationals - Caffeine by Perth Sound & Found

I was not sure what to expect when I was handed this song, but I must say this is the first track in a long time (this is coming from a DJ remember) where I not only liked it immediately, but I am tempted to go out and buy their album based solely on this one song.

The rhythm guitar starting it off was all it took to get my attention. Before I knew it I was bopping my head and tapping my foot to this catchy tune about how this guy loves and needs his partner “more than caffeine” (which I can tell you to a coffee enthusiast is a lot).  Listening to this gave me that wonderful feeling you get when you find something valuable and special when you weren’t looking, diamond in the rough.

The band consists of Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar-Ben Hesp. Lead Guitar- Matt McGuire. Bass- Madolyn Morel- Drums-Drew Winchester. I have no idea where these guys have been hiding but everything they did was spot on the mark!

Beautiful vocals in the background, a positive message in the lyrics, great instrumental work and a strong but not overpowering singer all work together to make it an enjoyable listen.

One of the only drawbacks with this song was probably the length. The song itself is fun and a great spin but coming in at just under 4 and a half minutes, I feel they could have shaved maybe 30-40 seconds off without losing any of the effect. That being said though, if listening to this song on a Sunday while watching the sun go down with a beer in hand, you will probably find the timing just right.

A perfect summer song and a fresh new sound for the Perth scene. I firmly believe that supporting locals is always good but only if they have the skill to back it up; The Irrationals tick all the boxes and most definitely deserve a listen.

Stillwater Giants - Give Into Me

Stillwater Giants - Give Into Me by Perth Sound & Found

Stillwater Giants, an alternative rock/jazz/reggae band from Perth and recent winners of Gozzy Rock 2011, have recently released their EP. When I was given the opportunity to review the first track of their EP, I snatched it up.

Give Into Me (the first track off their EP) starts interestingly with a style I haven’t heard from any other local Perth bands. The intro has a very jazz feel to it as it leads into the verse. After a strong start a brilliant vocal line follows, along with some harmonisations, in the pre-chorus, that are pulled off perfectly. The chorus features interesting instrumentation all around and with awesome vocal melodies and lyrics. The bridge has a gradual build up of instrumentation and vocal harmonies to an awesome use of vocals and backup vocals (similar to a canon). All of this leads to a short very “jazzy” guitar solo, an awesome way to end the song.

I found it amusing that on their Myspace page (apparently people do still use Myspace) their “Sounds like:” section was left blank. I haven’t heard a local Perth band that sounds anything like Stillwater Giants. Listening to Give Into Me for the first time was wonderful, I had no idea what I would expect and I was surprised a few times. Give Into Me is a fantastic track, so much so, that I plan on chasing up a copy of Stillwater Giants EP. I suggest you do to.

Malibu Pharmacy - Lambs Become Lions

Malibu Pharmacy - Lambs Become Lions by Perth Sound & Found

Malibu Pharmacy has come up with some interesting, in-depth lyrics for the track Lambs Become Lions. The lyrics could be used as a political representation or metaphorical sense in to the way the world is being run, and how the world appears to be falling apart. Malibu Pharmacy have also appeared to put a lot more thought in to the lyrics of this track compared to others such as Billo's Song, which lacks depth.

The vocalist, Alex Yates, has done a decent job with this track. His vocals are mostly coherent, but at times, he gets lost (not on the sense that he has forgotten the lyrics). However, for someone of his age and experience, he has done an outstanding job on this track, with an amazing set of pipes.

The track starts off with a great punch, making you want more with its up-beat style, however, there seems to be a fair few areas in the song where break downs could occur, but they either quickly skip over them or could use a bit more "oommff" from the bass, rhythm and lead guitars.

Needless to say, the song finishes off as it starts, with a punch! Giving the crowd some great "two-stepping" moments, and leaving you with a drop off. Great work guys, with a little more development and work I can see you going far.

Armada Vale - Wasted Life

Armada Vale - Wasted Life by Perth Sound & Found

The beginning of Wasted Life instantly caught my attention when I listened to it, especially when the second section of the guitar- the faster section- began. It sounds amazing, and I really do love how it sounds. It runs a little bit too slowly, but definitely doesn’t detract from the song. The way the guitar picks up and gets rough so rapidly sounds great, and the screaming over the top of it fits perfectly. I really like how the guitar sounds when it picks up speed, especially when it gets higher pitched and shrieky. The rapid changes between the quick and the slow guitar sound brilliant, and go with the screaming flawlessly.

The vocals behind the screaming sound amazing, and the throaty screaming and the clearer, higher sound of the singing mix in together just right. I like how the music gets slower towards the middle of the song, and it works perfectly after the rapid guitar and the screaming. I really love the mix between the higher-pitched shrieks and lower-pitched screams- it fits in perfectly and adds to the entire song. The way the song speeds up and slows down through the whole song works brilliantly. The warping sound of the guitar towards the end sounds great, but it does go on for just a few seconds too long, but overall, Wasted Life is a very good song. Great work, guys, and I can’t wait to hear more of your music.

HiHelo - Evil Grey

HiHelo - Evil Grey by Perth Sound & Found

The opening of Evil Grey is strong and really interesting, and I like how the different instruments together and the different layers to the beat add a quirkier sound to the song, especially in the beginning when all of the instruments and sounds come in section by section. The vocals sound great, and I love how well the slightly hoarse sound of the singer’s voice fits into the entire sound of the music. The lyrics also suit the beat very well, fitting in perfectly with the speed and tempo of the beat. The voices in the chorus that echo the lead singer sound amazing and add a more harmonious effect to the song. The sound of the guitar when it sounds more warped suits the overall sound of the song, and I love how well it works with the drumbeat and the vocals.
The way that the song slows down at the end with the twanging of the guitar and the warped sections sound brilliant, and I really love the way the vocals kind of get more airy towards the end of the song and the way the rhythm slows and fades out slightly as the song finishes. The way that the music gets more airy at the end is fantastic, and it suits the song perfectly- even without the vocals and the difference in the beat you still get the overall feel of Evil Grey. This sounds great, and I’m looking forward to hearing more of your songs in the future.

Pictures of Sarah - EP Review

Pictures of Sarah - I <3 Matt and EP Review by Perth Sound & Found

Pictures Of Sarah (a five piece, post-hardcore band hailing from Perth) much awaited EP has hit our shores. Being influenced from bands such as Thrice and The Amity Affliction it features heavy riffs, intense breakdowns and brutal vocals that would make any priest lose faith in god.
The EP in question features 5 tracks,
1. Shame and Pride,
2. Father Time,
3. Weight Of A Thousand Worlds,
4. I <3 Matt,
5. Straitjacket For A Sane Man.
Personally, I don’t usually listen to post-hardcore tunes but I can safely say I enjoyed listening to this EP with I <3 Matt standing out for me.

The EP begins with Shame and Pride, starting with an intense guitar riff (that reminds me of old school Slayer solo’s) and an awesome mix of clean and “unclean” vocals. With some interesting tempo changes the track ends with a bang that puts you on the edge of your seat. Next, Father Time, which from the beginning seems like a relatively heavier more emotionally involved song, features more “unclean” vocals and interesting almost quirky “fills” that link to other parts of the song. These fills and different parts of the song are blended awesome which lead to an ending that leaves you almost feeling dirty and uneasy. Weight of A Thousand Worlds changes pace a bit with an interesting drumbeat and a slow paced bridge and a few time changes that are just insane but were pulled off amazingly. The song contains more ‘cleaner’ vocals that have a old-school hardcore feel about them and contains a diverse array of instrumentation that impressed me quite a bit. I <3 Matt Starts off solidly with a chorus that glides seamlessly into the heavier verse that sounds musically amazing. Then going to into a dirty breakdown only to smash out some blast beats. The song contains so many aspects that are blended together beautifully, along with some gang vocals, which in my books are awesome. Finally, Straitjacket For A Sane Man differs slightly from the rest of the EP with a strong start only to fall into a trippy riff that contrasts completely, falling back into this throughout the song, and at the end where it stops and climaxes to a full out gang vocal massacre, a great way to end the EP.
Overall, the EP is, in short, awesome. The only thing that let me down was the actual recording quality of some of the vocals (some sounded like they were recorded in an empty alley way), being intentional or not, this did not “float my boat”. Despite that, I was glued to my headphones. With heavy hooks, brutal vocals, incredibly diverse drumming, time changes that puzzled me and just the diversity that could be contained in a single song let alone an EP I sat listening to these tracks more then once. I look forward to hearing more from Pictures Of Sarah.

The Dive is a great track. I love combinational sound created by the
Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals. They fit perfectly together! The
vocals on this song are quite distinctive and thats what makes it such
a great song. The backing guitar work is quite repetitive but thats
what builds the song. The guitar solo is great! Loved it! Its great to
see vocal harmonies used later on in this song it varies the vocals
and creates a very unique sound. I love the effect on the guitar
towards the end it reminds me of an alternative beatles sound that was
used to create an abnormal sound in some of their psychadelic songs
such as "Strawberry Fields Forever". The Dive in an overall is a very
unique song with quite a calming feel to it. I am very impressed that
this is a home recording. It sounds amazing for a home recording!
Great work guys I am chucking this on my iPod right now!

As We Fall - Tea and Tim Tams by Perth Sound & Found

For a name like this I expected a very chilled back acoustic song.
However I was plesently suprised! These guys have done a great job of
this song! Another great guitar riff! The drums really power the song,
and it definetly is not a simple drumming pattern with great work of
what i'd assume to be a double kick. The guitar fits in perfectly with
the rest of the song and really thickens it out. I love the softer
part of this song, its great to see a change of dynamics in a song
like this. The vocals are also great, I actually really like the
vocals in the softer part as its such a change from the harsher
rougher vocals that make up the song. I thinkyou guys have done a
great job of this song and its great to see so many different
techniques being used at once! Keep up the great work guys!

Kallan Phillips - You're Wasted (On The Young) by Perth Sound & Found

I'll be honest and say when Kallan sent me this I didn't think it would be too much. This would probably be because he described it as a "rough track" and "nothing amazing" however after listening to this I feel like someone needs to slap him. This track is actually really good for a rough track, the quality is amazing and the vocals aren't too bass dominant. I loved that the vocals fitted perfectly with the guitar part in this song. I love the guitar part at the start it reminds me a lot of some of Tommy Emmanuel's early guitar work (If you don't know who he is look him up!) . I feel that it would work a little better if the guitar at the start continued throughout the song or something similar just to give it a bit more variety. Saying that there is quite an awesome little guitar part closer towards the end of the song. Kallan I think you've done an awesome job on this song. I highly recommend getting a set of probably 3 or 4 songs and looking at going to a studio and recording a single. Keep me posted on any new songs you write! Great work!

Even though this is an unmastered track it certainly holds its ground.
Love that fade in! This song is built around a great riff. Its very
catchy and is a perfect hook for the song! The vocals are clean and
very clear. Great work with the vocal harmonies it creates this fuller
thick sound tha suits the song perfectly. The drums do a great job and
giving the song a driving force and that small bass solo fits in
perfectly! The listner is than presented with a very unique guitar
solo. I love the effect used there it stands out and embelishes the
song well. I must say my favourite thing in this song is the guitar
work but its closely followed by the vocal harmonies. This is a track
I highly reccomend all Perth residents hear. Great work guys! Keep me

Emberville - Hit The Lights

Emberville - Hit The Lights by Perth Sound & Found

Loved the guitar riff at the start for this track!

The thing I like about Emberville is they have a unique sound that
doesnt stray to far from the norm, this means you can distinguish
their songs from others but it still fits in perfectly to be able to
be played on air. I feel this song could have benefited if they had
the vocals a little bit louder as at times its a little difficult to
hear the melody being sung however the vocalist does a great job in
this song. The drumming is great in this song as it powers the track
along and fits in perfectly with the guitars. Its a bit hard to
distinguish what the bass is doing in this song but whatever its doing
is working perfectly to tie everything together. Great work guys! Keep
me up to date with any future tracks!

Seer Cya - Bitter Ones

Seer Cya - Bitter Ones by Perth Sound & Found

Now this is a band that knows how to rock! "Bitter Ones" by Seer Cya in my opinion is a mix of classic rock and punk sounds. The vocals are very classic rock and use vocal harmonies to establish a smooth dominating sound and the guitar plays a very punk-ish riff. However its a bloody awesome riff! Later towards the middle of the song there is one hell of a guitar solo which fits in perfectly to the rest of the song. The drums throughout the song are great as they really build the song and give it a driving force behind it. They power the rest of the song along and ensure that the listeners ears are in for a treat. Great work guys, I loved the track you've done an amazing job at this song. Make sure you send me some more to hear!

Damien Cripps - Angels In Darkness by Perth Sound & Found

Wow! I did not expect what I heard. There is some awesome guitar work in this song and it works perfectly with the vocals. The vocals in this song remind me somewhat of a "Nickelback" rougher type of sound, however they are very unique and I could not say they are similar to Nickelback for that reason. I love the vocal harmonies that are being used throughout this song they have a bit of a R&B feel and a bit of a "churchy" feel. However this song is definitely not a churchy song as an overall! The drum work isn't very noticeable till towards the end, this is probably due to your attention being drawn to the vocals and the guitar. The quality of the audio and the tracks in this song is great, its very clear and very professional. I loved this track and I hope to hear a lot more of Damien Cripps band!

This is such a great tune! It kinda reminds me of Shinedown but as a huge Shinedown fan this is a great thing.

I love the guitar riff in this song. I feel however that the second guitar (rhythm) should have been a bit louder to get some volume behind this song. The drums are just perfect in this song you can hear every thing that is being played and very clearly. The vocals are just perfect in this song and I just love the vocals in general, they are what remind me of Shinedown. TungXsten you have just gained yourself another fan!

I think you guys have done an amazing job for a garageband demo! I hope to hear some more tunes from you in the future!

Looking for some classic rock? Than these are the guys for you!
Pistenbroke have done an amazing job at this song. I love the classic sound that these guys have managed to achieve. This song is quite Guns N Roses like and I absolutely love that sound. The guitar riff in this song is catchy and really gives the song some power behind itself. I would have liked to have seen the vocals a little louder but I feel that the volume they are at right now gives enough power for them to just stand out over the top. Watch out for the killer solo in this song! Its awesome! The rhythm guitar in the background help pulls the song along. The bass does a great job at keeping a straight feel to the song. Woa this girl has an amazing voice!
Usually you can tell what a song will be like in the first thirty seconds, but this challenges that. It takes a little while to get into it and I think it would benefit to do a shorter version but other than that its amazing. Alanna has such a very smooth calming voice and it fits perfectly with the guitar part she has written. Great work Alanna, I am excited to hear some other tracks from you in the future!

Aaagh Bats - Say It To My Face

AAAGH BATS! - Say It To My Face by Perth Sound & Found

AAAGH BATS! are one of those bands I highly recommend every watches in the Perth scene.
They classify their genre as "dirty punk with epic solos" and I would have to agree! They have a very unique sound, the great thing about having a female voice singing and a really grunge/dirty sound is they balance one another out to sound amazing! Their first song of their "Show Us Ya Fangs" EP starts with an awesome scream! Then throughout the rest of the song the listener is lead on a journey by the awesome guitar riff and that killer little squeal or slide riff that is being played.
I have been informed they will be recording this EP again but making it even better (which I think will be hard to do), so keep your eyes and ears alert waiting for it!
I'm glad to see such a great band come out of Perth.

Natalia - Borrowed Time

Natalia - Borrowed Time by Perth Sound & Found

This fast paced local pop song blew me away.
The first time I heard "Natalia" was with her album "Open Arms" and that album had me in awe of her vocals, my favourite song being "I Can't Love You".
"Borrowed Time" certainly didn't let my expectations down! I would describe it as Pop utilising dance and techno. The thing I love about Natalia's music is its unique in its own way but doesn't stray to far away from the mainstream. This sound will allow her to go very far and hopefully one day make it big!
I loved the vocal harmonies in this song along with the catchy riff that I believe is played by a synth. You've done an awesome job Natalia, keep it up and I look forward to hearing the new stuff you are recording in Sydney.

Looking for a sweet heavy band? Then I've got the band for you! Temporal!
I was recently sent a copy of Temporal's 2011 Demo. My favourite track of it was "Waging War". It starts with a great guitar riff that really pulls the song along. The drum keeps a good drive to the song and moves it along. The vocals are quite heavy but I was amazed at the tone, strength and duration that the singer can get. Definitely worth listening to!

The Corner - Tongue

The Corner - Tongue by Perth Sound & Found

Whoa! What a bass riff. I have to say the most catchy thing about this song is the amazing bass riff. I love that the main riff isn’t too overwhelming but yet its still really dam catchy. The drums in Tongue have such a driving force behind them. The drums really drive this song along and give the listener a truly rocking experience. The guitar provides a great rhythm that helps drive the song, however this is really all we hear till about three minutes in when there is a kick arse solo! The vocals on Tongue accompany the rest of the song perfectly. This is an amazing song guys! I absolutely love it, it was a truly rocking experience when I listened to this. I love the combination of fast lyrics and slower lyrics, it works very well. Keep up the amazing work guys!
